neato! has come a good way from its initial release which only received links and text from a bookmarklet in your web browser. Later, phone to computer was added, bringing with it a native Chrome browser extension and a new neato! page for you to receive content.

v1.0 will be bringing a bunch of newness. But first…

New UI

In this shot, you get to see the new theme and color scheme. I’m a firm believer that even if your app only does one thing it should look good doing it, and neato! is no exception. You can see that the important information of knowing your personal code is right up front and easier to see. Below it is your new friend code, which I’ll explain in detail later.

The left button is the “Add a Friend” button, which will also be explained later. The middle button is the “Send To” button to send stuff to your computer and other neato! users (more on that later). The third button is the “Reload Dashboard” button for those times you’ve accidentally swiped the dashboard away, but the card is still open.

Below the buttons is the familiar History list of the last 10 messages sent to your phone in the last 24-72 hours.

Scrolling down the scene, you can see the rest of the history list, with a button to refresh your history to make sure you’re seeing the latest list of stuff sent to your phone.

Below the history list is a new “Preferences” button. All of the old settings have been moved to a new Preferences scene (Metric stats sending, auto-close card, IPK handler, etc). You can also access the Preferences from the application menu.

Overall, this streamlines and cleans up the app. It’s not as cumbersome to navigate. When the app first launched and it only did one thing, it made sense that it all fit on one card. Now with different directions to send data and more preferences,  the options needed to split off to their own scene.

Phone to Phone

The biggest thing besides the new UI that you’ll see in 1.0 is that you’ll now be able to send stuff from one phone to another (provided they’re both running neato!). Before you can just start sending stuff to a phone, you’ll have to add the other person as a friend. You’ll tap the Add Friend button and then type in the user’s Friend Code in the dialog box. After doing that, they’ll get a pop-up alert asking if they will approve your request.

What’s great is, as long as the neato! dashboard notification is running, it doesn’t matter what the active app is — you’ll get your notification anyway. Tapping approve will add the other person to your contacts and send them an alert that you’ve approved their request, which will then add you to their contacts as well.

Once you’ve become friends with someone, you can tap the “Send To” button, which will pop-open the usual Send scene, but with a new option (I haven’t updated this scene to the new theme yet):

You now have a “Send To” field. This will let you select whether you want to send the info to your computer, or to a friend.

Note that these screenshots were taken days apart, so just pretend “Geoff” says “Geoffrey”.

Speaking of names, when your Friend Code is first generated, you’ll be asked for your name. This will be sent to your friend for requests and for their contacts list. You can change your name in the Preferences.

If the stuff you’re sending is just plain text, your friend will have it pop-up in the usual Text View scene automatically. However, for security reasons, if you send your friend a URL, they will get a pop-up alert asking them what they’d like to do.

This way, you won’t be interrupted, and, you won’t have any nefarious or inappropriate websites popping up on your phone.

You’ll be able to remove friends from your contacts, which will revoke their ability to send you anything.

What’s Next?

In addition to all that, v1.0 will bring a new dashboard notification. Instead of how it is now where you just tap it to bring up the main card, there will now be three buttons. The first will let you open up the main card as usual. The next will allow you to open the preferences directly. The third will be a dedicated “Send To” button so you don’t have to launch the main card just to tap “Send To”.

Also, in addition to just sending text and URLs to other phones, you’ll be able to send an individual contact to another neato! user. This is great for those times when a friend needs a mutual friend’s phone number. You could look it up, remember the number, send it to your friend, then they could copy/paste it into a new contact. OR, you could tap the eventual Send Contact button, pick the mutual friend, send it to your neato! friend, then with one tap, they can have that contact saved on their phone. That’s the plan, anyway. Haven’t started coding it yet.

And yes, the Chrome extension will be updated.

I still plan on a Firefox and a Safari plugin. It’ll come by the end of the year most likely.

So, there you have it! A run down of what’s to come in the next neato!, which should be finished this weekend(ish).

UPDATE: I’m trying to keep the app “un-social.” That is, neato! is meant for direct communication of information (not conversations) between two people that know and trust each other. I don’t plan to allow you to search for or discover users. Friend capabilities will not stretch further than outlined above.

We’ve all got a billion social networks and usernames and passwords to worry about already!

Think of neato! phone-to-phone as “enhanced SMS”.

It’s been some time and lots has happened! I’ll cover foursquare, neato!, incredible!, and Developer Day.

foursquare:
Lots of complaints from Verizon users that the app won’t let them log in or find GPS. I know it’s due to Verizon GPS wonkiness, but it used to work, so I might have to try something different. Expect a fix possibly over the holiday week.

neato!:
Lots of major issues here. neato! is completely broken for most users. I fixed the issues of sending from Computer > Phone and submitted that update to Palm. Expect to download it today. However, Phone > Computer and History do not work and am working on a fix for that.

The problem is that PubNub (the underlying technology for neato!) changed their API to v3.0. This is great because it’s a little faster, cleaner, and adds error-trapping. However, this means I need to make changes to the app, and also the Chrome extension AND your bookmarklet. Once the next version of neato! is released (v0.9.5 most likely, not 0.9.3 that will be available later today), you’ll be told you have to delete your existing neato! bookmarklet and redrag it to your bookmarks. Full instructions will greet you when you upgrade to 0.9.5.

Also, after 0.9.5 is released fixing the bugs, expect v1.0 to come soon with a new feature. I’ll tell you about it later, but you can rest assured it’ll be awesome because the idea was Rod Whitby’s. Intrigue!

incredible!
As he mentioned in a recent Palmcast, I’ve sent Dieter of Precentral information and screenshots of incredible!. Expect all to be revealed soon after his Developer Day hangover has passed.

Developer Day
HP/Palm’s Developer Day(s) this past weekend in New York was awesome! Many thanks go to the Developer Relations team at Palm for inviting me to speak at the event. They went above and beyond what I had expected and all the goodies, food, speakers, and accommodations were amazing. If you’re on the fence about becoming a webOS developer, it’s time to finish climbing over that fence and download the SDK. This is a company that is dedicated to YOUR success more than their own success, giving you the tools to develop an great app and have it available on not just webOS, but also iOS and Android. These are truly unique people and unique companies and we are truly lucky to be a part of this community.

It was awesome to meet so many developers, users, Palm and HP employees, and TONS of other people. It’s weird that I can say things like “I have a contact at the NY Times” and “I was talking to the co-founder of Untappd the other day…” and “Oh yeah, I know a guy over at Yahoo”.

Thanks, HP and Palm, for showing your developers some love. I’d be more than happy to make it out to the next east coast Developer Day (and WAY more than happy to make it out to a Gulf Coast Developer Day ;).

Edit: Maybe I should clarify my remarks: By saying Palm is dedicated to your success more than their own, I really should have explained that I meant “almost more than.” My point still stands, however: Palm and HP want developers to succeed however possible, but of course they want you to help webOS succeed. I kind of thought that was implied. Anyhoo, on to the reading!

After several months, a new version of neato! is out. First: bug fixes. Well, really only one: the “View History” button actually works now. It refreshes each time you view the Preferences card.

Features! I’ll run through the quick ones first.

  • Reload Dashboard. If you accidentally swipe away the dashboard icon, but still have the Preferences card open, you can tap this button to reload it. Also comes in handy in case for some reason neato! doesn’t reconnect.
  • New Options for Text. Instead of just Copy, SMS, and Email, I’ve added “Tweet with BadKitty”, “Tweet with Twee”, “Add to Notes”, and “Track with Pack ‘N’ Track”. Obviously you’ll need the apps installed to use these features.
  • Download Files. Now when you send the URL of an image, document, ZIP file, audio file, or video file to your phone, neato! will prompt you if you’d like to just launch the file like normal, or download it. (Downloaded files go into the neato folder on your USB drive) This is great for, say, right-clicking an MP3 file on a website (podcast, ringtone, etc), sending it to your phone, and then downloading to listen to on your phone.
  • Cross-App Launching. (Note hearing some issues surrounding this, but worth noting its existence anyway). Apps will be able to let you send content from your phone by piping through neato!. Imagine a Twitter app sending the text of a Tweet to your computer, or an RSS reader sending the URL of the article and having it open instantly on your computer.

So, the big news! Send to Computer! For this to work, you need to have your neato! URL open on your computer (looks like http://zhephree.com/neato/id/a1b2c3). Tapping the “Send to Computer” button in the app will present you with a text box where you can paste in anything — text or URL — and send it. When the web page on your computer gets the message, it’ll pop-up a box with the contents in it so you can act upon it.

BUT! There’s a bonus. I just now released the Google Chrome browser extension for neato!. You can download it from your neato! page. Once downloaded, you can receive content from your phone without having your neato! page open. You can also send content to your phone by clicking the neato! icon in your browser’s toolbar, or by right clicking text, links, and images in the web page itself.

This opens the door for a ton of opportunities! I’m working on the Firefox extension and the Safari extension is after that. I may let others develop for other browsers once I finish these.

So, go ahead and download the app and give it a whirl!

So, last night I submitted v2.0.10 to Palm for review and hopefully it’ll be in the App Catalog shortly. There’s like a billion updates, the techy-version of the change log is at the bottom of this post.

Version 2.0. I can’t believe we’ve hit that milestone already. For those not counting, foursquare 0.6.4 was released on January 1, 2010 (as the 999th app in the Catalog), which means that we hit 2.0 in exactly 11 months. Considering the app was developed by 2 guys in their spare time, I think that’s pretty significant, given the magnitude of the project.

When v0.6.4 launched at the beginning of this year, foursquare (as a service) had about 250,000 users. Today, they have over 4 million. When 0.6.4 launched, it was the 999th app and today there are over 4300 (official App Catalog) apps.

One month after 0.6.4 launched, in February 2010, we had around 2000 users. Today, there are over 61,000 webOS foursquare users. (Which, unfortunately, is only 1.5% of all foursquare users, but that’s up from 0.8% last February, so, it’s significant).

So, what’s next?

Well, I’m taking a break from foursquare (barring any major bugs in 2.0.10). I’m going to focus on neato! because I want v1.0 of neato! (yes, with phone to computer) out well before Palm’s Developer Day later this month.

Once I get neato! v1.0 out, I’m switching gears back to foursquare to move the app from v1 of foursquare’s API to v2 of their API, which includes moving from Basic Auth (entering in your username and password and having the app store them) over to OAuth2 (which means you’ll just be authorizing the app to use your foursquare account and no credentials will be stored on your phone). This will yield better security, AND, hopefully a faster app with the new API (I can’t discuss v2 of the foursquare API as it’s in private beta right now).

Once I move foursquare over to v2 of the API, then I”m switching gears over to incredible! and I’d love to get a beta of incredible! out by the end of 2010, but I’m not betting cash on that. And no, I can’t tell you what incredible! is or does. All I can say is that it will indeed live up to its name.

So, the next 60 days are going to be busy. Luckily, since I set my own deadlines, no one will yell at me if I miss them, so, don’t expect any of this to be set in stone. I’ll likely take longer than I mentioned.

But, I felt like since we hit such a huge milestone with foursquare tonight, that this would be a great time to air all that out.

But tonight: no code! Relaxing night with zeldamac and no computer!

Note to beta testers: UPGRADE TO v2.0.10! It is different from the v2.0.9 version that you have right now.

FOURSQUARE v2.0.10 CHANGE LOG

  • [SHOUT] Fixed a bug that made the screen go white after sending a shout
  • [SHOUT] After shouting, a result scene is displayed to let you know it was successful, and, if you were to unlock a abdge from a shout (Overshare, for example) you would see it displayed like a check-in does
  • [LOGIN] App now successfully handles GPS errors, displays an error message explaining the error and how to fix it, and then stops trying to login and locate you (Thanks James!)
  • [ABOUT / PREFERENCES] Handle launching Shout and Profile correctly
  • [USER INFO] Moved overlay of badge descriptions closer to bottom
  • [VENUE DETAIL] data reloads when scene is activated so that it is up to date after a checkin

  • [VENUE DETAIL] data reloads when scene is activated so that it is up to date after a checkin
  • [USER INFO] no longer shows checkin count history row for users other than authd user
  • [ALL SCENES] handles shout launches better
  • [VIEW TIP] fixed event listener for keyup
  • Open users or venues by performing a metatap, that is, holding your finger down on the gesture area of your phone and then tapping a user or a venue.
  • All new help system accessible through the navigation menu. Send me an e-mail, or look through FAQ topics to find out how to perform certain tasks.
  • All code has been optimized. App runs faster and uses less memory.
  • [LOGIN] When receiving an error when logging in, you receive better info. Also, when foursquare is down, instead of suggesting yo visit their Twitter account, the app now directs you to status.foursquare.com.
  • [ADD TIP/TODO] Dialog now has a character counter. Tips and To Dos can be 200 characters long.
  • [TODO LIST] To Dos have now been placed in their own view, away from tips.
  • [USER INFO] User info has a new look. Can see mutual friends, tips from the user.
  • [VENUE DETAIL] Venue detail has a new look also. Now shows you how many friends are checked-in, also how many tips were left by your friends
  • [VENUE DETAIL] Banner at top of the view now lets you know if you have a to do list item for that venue.
  • [VENUE DETAIL] To mark a tip as done or to save it, now just tap on the tip itself. The individual buttons have been removed
  • [VENUE DETAIL] Venue specials and nearby specials are no longer automatically displayed. You access specials by tapping the "Special Here" or "Special Nearby" banner in the top right. This will open a special dialog box. Swipe through the specials to view them all.
  • [NEARBY TIPS] To Do list has been moved to its own view
  • [NEARBY TIPS] Toggle between nearby tips and nearby tips left by your friends
  • [VIEW TIP] New dialog box. When tapping a tip anywhere in the app, this dialog opens to show the venue, the tip, the user, and give the option to add or remove to your to do list, or mark the tip has done.
  • [NEARBY VENUES] When searching, at the end of the list you’ll find two new options: "Add this Venue" so others can check-in to it later, and "Check-in Anyway" which will use the text you searched for as the venue name. This will not add the venue, but will show you as being there. You cannot earn badges or points or mayorships when checking-in this way.
  • [CHECKIN RESULT] After checking in, if a friend has left a tip at that venue or one nearby, the tip would be displayed. However, now, the tip is displayed, but also gives you the option to add it to your to do list or mark it as being done. It also looks nicer.
  • [ADD VENUE] The map no longer overlays other widgets on the screen. Now, the small thumbnail map is an image. Tapping that opens a fullscreen map where you can adjust the GPS position of the venue. Swiping back out of the map will record the new position.
  • [ALL SCENES] Performing the back gesture will now close the navigation menu if it is open.
  • [VENUE DETAIL] Airports that contain the airplane UNICODE symbol now display an image of the airplane since the webOS font does not support this character.
  • [NEARBY VENUES] Shake to refresh has been removed
  • [CHECKINS] Shake to refresh has been removed
  • [LEADERBOARD] The leaderboard has been removed from the main navigation menu. You can still access the leaderboard by viewing your Profile and tapping the Leaderboard option there.

So, the next version of neato! will support sending stuff to your computer. This will be accomplished a few ways.

Browser Extensions
For modern browsers (Firefox, Safari 5+, Chrome 6+), a neato! extension/addon will be developed. The extension will allow you to get rid of the JavaScript bookmarklet completely. A new button will appear in your browser’s toolbar and clicking it will send the selected text or URL to your phone, as the bookmarklet currently does. It’ll also allow you to right-click text, images, and links and send them to your phone. Since the extension has more permissions and abilities than a bookmark, this lets the neato! extension receive content. That means you can send text and URLs to your computer from your phone.

Hosted Web Page
I’m working out the specifics of this (cost, other logistics), but your current neato! unique URL (the one the app gives you, http://zhephree.com/neato/id/XXXXX) will not only be the download location for extensions or the bookmarklet, but it’ll be listening to receive data from your phone. This is how browsers that don’t have extensions (Internet Explorer, Opera, etc) will be able to receive stuff. It’s not as elegant or “always on” as an extension, but it’s the only way right now.

Printing
After HP announced they were going to have printers that allow you to print from your iOS device, I figured I’d let slip a feature I had planned but hadn’t announced: printing from your webOS phone to your computer. How will this work? Well, you’ll need a browser extension for it to work. But…

  • Let’s say you want to print a website: copy the URL from the web browser app, paste it into neato! and tap the Print button. It’ll send that URL to your browser, which will open the page and then send it to your printer.
  • Want to print a document stored on your phone? Yeah, we can do that. However, it’ll require a Google Docs account. On your phone in neato!, you’d select the document you need to print and it’ll upload it to Google Docs, open it on your computer, then send it to your printer.

Keep in mind, I haven’t written a single line of code for this, but this is the plan. But since I haven’t written any code yet, this will likely change some, but I really want to add this feature into neato!.

Just one of the many new things coming in the next version of neato!, which will be coming in a couple of weeks or so.

But don’t hold me to the details!

Send from Other Apps
The next version will allow other webOS apps to send data to your computer! All they’ll have to do is send a launch parameter to neato! and neato will handle the rest! Imagine, a web browser patch to send to your computer, or Twitter apps sending text to your computer, or a notes app sending a note to your computer to be printed. The possibilities are pretty damn endless.

Version 0.7.1 of neato! is available right now in the App Catalog. It fixes a bug introduced in v0.7.0, which brought you new features like sending text from the app to e-mail or SMS, downloading music and video files, and a few others.

The next version of the app will make your life even easier. It will not add so much to the phone side of things as it will add to the computer side of things. Yes, the next version of neato! will allow you to send text and links from your phone to your computer!

To accomplish this, I will have to abandon the JavaScript bookmarklet you’re using now and move to native browser extensions and add-ons. I’m just about done with the Chrome 6.0+ extension (which means I’m finished the Chrome 5.0 version for you Mac users).

Here are the browser I plan to develop extensions for: Chrome 6.0+, Chrome 5.0, Firefox 3.6+, and Safari 5. I will still leave the bookmarklet available for those in Internet Explorer and Opera. I will also eventually look into an Opera extension/widget.

What’s so great about an extension vs. a bookmarklet? Lots!

  • With an extension always running in your webbrowser, your computer can now receive text and URLs.
  • Get updates to the computer side of neato! instantly as opposed to re-copying a bookmarklet when I tell you to.
  • Adds context-menu options so you can right-click links and images and highlighted text to send to your phone (Not available in Chrome 5.0)
  • Allows for better future compatibility with more websites since code for an extension can be essentially infinite whereas a bookmarklet is limited to a few hundred characters.

All in all, it’ll make your life easier and allow me to make neato! better. As I said, the bookmarklet will always be available for other browsers (or people who can’t install extensions on their work computer), but it won’t let you receive content on your computer. I may enhance your unique neato! URL the app gives you to allow you to receive content there, but I’m not focusing on that just yet.

The new version of neato! will also feature an API so other webOS apps can tie into it. For instance, maybe Relego could have a neato! button that sends a URL to neato! which then opens the URL in a new tab on your computer. And that allows someone to develop a patch for the web browser to add a Send to neato! menu item. Hint, hint.

I don’t have a timeline on when this will be released just yet. I’m waiting to finish all of the browser extensions first.

Text

Added some cool stuff to neato! last night. You’ll get this update probably tomorrow, with some other enhancements as well.

By popular demand, you can now e-mail yourself the link to get the bookmarklet so you don’t have to retype it on your computer.

And you can probably see that history button there too. Yep, you can view the last 10 messages sent to your phone, even if neato! wasn’t running at the time. Great in case your screen shut off before you sent the item, or maybe your phone’s across the room. Tapping on an item in the list will launch it exactly like neato! does when receiving it from your web browser.

And, now you’ll be able to select which maps app opens Google Maps URLs, and, you’ll be able to decide whether Internalz or Preware opens links to ipk files. Basically, this allows you to install homebrew with about 2 clicks, with no copy/pasting or retyping or emailing yourself links.

Also, a little fun fact: your bookmarklet is secretly already working with Precentral. When viewing a homebrew app in the Precentral homebrew catalog, like, say Dr. Podder, instead of highlighting the URL of the ipk and using the copy/pasted text to copy/paste into Preware or Internalz like Precentral’s video explained, in the new version simply clicking neato! while viewing a homebrew app listing will grab the ipk URL automatigically and open it on your phone with Internalz or Preware, depending on your settings.

Also, now the Text View screen allows you to not only Copy the text sent to your phone, but you can now easily open up a new e-mail or SMS message with the text pre-filled in the body of the message.

Two more features you can’t see in these screenshots:

If the text you’ve highlighted on a webpage is a phone number, the Phone dialer app will open with the number pre-filled for you. neato! supports a variety of phone number formats, so it should work fine. It may have issues with international numbers, but I’m working on that.

The final new fetaure is, if the text you’ve highlighted on a webpage is a URL, neato! treats it like a URL. So if you’re reading a forum and someone pasted a URL in a message, highlight it, and send it to neato! and it’ll open up on your phone, just as if you were viewing that page. This works great for sites other than Precentral that link to homebrew.

I have a lots more features still on the way (like sending from your phone to your computer!), but this next update will be a huge boost. You’ll likely see it on Wednesday night.

Also, make sure you keep an eye on this post from yesterday to see all the different ways people are using neato!. I’m updating it as I see new ways.

Text

My first paid app appeared in the Palm App Catalog this weekend. To me, it’s super useful, but the abilities of it may not be immediately apparent to everyone, so I figured I’d shed some light on some use cases.

First, you should pick up neato! for a cool $1.43 from the App Catalog here.

After downloading and installing the app on your phone, launch neato! and tap the “Generate URL” button. That’ll give you a unique URL that you need to visit on your computer, not on your phone. Visit the URL on your computer and drag the link it gives you to your bookmark toolbar in your web browser. You’re done!

Now, neato!’s core capability is sending the current URL in your web browser to your phone and having it instantly open on your phone’s browser. This will work on any website. It’s super hand for taking long blog posts on the road, or maybe there’s a site you’d rather have on your phone. But this functionality exposes lots more!

Transfer PC Bookmarks to Your Phone
Load up a bookmark on your PC, click “neato!” and once it’s open on your phone, bookmark it on your phone.

Use it as a poor man’s Read It Later
Say you’re reading a blog post somewhere and have to leave your computer, or maybe you want to go relax on the couch instead of sitting at your desk. Click “neato!” and start reading from your phone.

Use webOS’s multitasking to watch how-to videos while working or playing
There are lots of how-to videos for webOS and webOS apps available on YouTube, and since you can have a game or website open while having a YouTube video open on webOS, you can swipe back-and-forth easily! Great for Angry Birds walk-throughs.

Take driving directions with you on the go!
The neato! bookmarklet is smart: it knows when you’re on a Google Maps page. One problem with Google Maps is, since everything is handled with JavaScript, the URL in your browser never changes, so you can’t just send that URL to your browser. Luckily, neato! is smart enough to find the true URL to your current view or directions in Google Maps and it sends that to your phone instead! And the directions open in the Google Maps app, to boot!

Open Apps from the Palm website into the App Catalog on your phone
When viewing an App Catalog link on your computer, you see a page like this giving you some screenshots and information about the app. It’s handy, but then getting that app on your phone isn’t so easy. You can either search for the app by name in the catalog, or use Palm’s handy “Send to my phone” feature straight from the page. The problem with the latter method is that it sends a text message to your phone which, aside from possibly costing you money, can take a while to get to your phone sometimes. Clicking “neato!” while viewing an App Catalog URL instantly opens the App Catalog straight to the app you want, ready to download. (Thanks @acarback!)

Send short clips of text to your phone to SMS to a friend.
Maybe a joke or funny tweet, or a friend’s address needs to be texted to another friend. Normally, you’d have to re-type the text on your phone from your PC, but now you can just click “neato!” and have the text, ready to be edited and copy/pasted popped up on your phone.

Open PDFs on your phone
When viewing a PDF in your browser, neato! will open the PDF in the PDF Viewer app on your phone! (thanks, @linuxq!)

Stream music on your phone!
If the URL of the page you’re on on your PC’s browser is an audio file, neato! will open it on your phone with the Music app.

There are TONS more uses for neato! that even I haven’t stumbled upon. However, here’s some that coming soon, but aren’t yet active:

  • Open homebrew apps listed on webOSRoundUp and PreCentral in Internalz or Preware on your phone to make downloading faster and easier
  • When text being sent to neato! is a phone number, phone dialer opens with phone number pre-populated (but doesn’t dial it)
  • When text being sent to neato! is a URL you highlighted and sent (i.e., an un-linked URL from a forum), URL opens in browser, like sending a normal URL

So, how are you guys using neato!? If you’ve come up with any interesting uses, comment with them below and I’ll edit this post with them here!

Thanks for downloading, btw!
